About Merryhills School

Merryhills is a community primary school, located in the pleasant green belt area of Enfield. We are very fortunate in having a spacious site where playing fields, playground areas, and a conservation area surround our main building. The school opened in 1940 and has provided education for local families ever since. The building has been extended and modernised to meet the demands of an increasing school population and a changing curriculum. We are currently expanding to a three-form entry school with building completion by April 2013. In 2016 we will be at full capacity with 930 children on roll.
Children are admitted according to the Local Authority criteria and we keep a waiting list of children should any vacancies arise. We are pleased to welcome all local pupils and their families to our school.

The Merryhills Expectations
At Merryhills we are expected to:
•try our best
•respect others and treat them as we want to be treated
•work, learn and play safely
•work together to look after our school
We are committed to maintaining an atmosphere and environment where children feel secure, happy and motivated to learn and where there is a sense of belonging and mutual respect. Appropriate behaviour is expected and encouraged by the promotion of self-dicipline and the nuturing of positive self-esteem. The school community can achieve this by adhering to the Merryhills Code
Members of the school community are: children, staff, governors, parents and visitors.
The Merryhills Code
We will…..
•try our best
•listen to eachother
•take responsibility for our own actions
•have respect for all people and all property
•be honest
•walk around the school safely and quietly
•ask for help when there is a problem
Following the code and making the right choices about our behaviour means that everyone will feel safe, happy and ready to learn.

Attendance and Punctuality
All pupils must attend school every day unless they are unwell. Children who are frequently late or absent from school are disadvantaged in their learning. It is important that all our families encourage the idea that school matters and they should attend every day and arrive on time. Holidays during term time are unauthorised.
When your child is unwell you must telephone school in the morning on the first day of absence and when your child returns to school you should send a note to their teacher explaining the absence. We may telephone you at home if we are not advised of the reason why your child is absent from school. If your child is persistently absent or late we will contact our Education Welfare Officer who will contact you. Their role is to ensure that all children attend school every day. Only the school can authorise an absence and any request for absence should be addressed to the Headteacher who has the authority to decide whether or not to authorise the absence.
Good habits start early and you may need to make some changes to your daily routines so that your children arrive at school on time. The first part of the day is important and if children arrive late they can miss a crucial introduction or explanation of a lesson. Punctuality is monitored in a similar way to attendance and persistent lateness will be followed up by our Education Welfare Officer.
