Autumn Term

Year 6 Curriculum content

One of the ways in which we hope to involve you in your child’s education is to outline the topics and areas, which they will be covering each term. We hope that you will find this information useful when discussing and helping your child with their work at home.

Language

We will be implementing the literacy hour, through which we will be covering various aspects of grammar and punctuation including apostrophes, speech and sentence construction. The children will have the opportunity to write in a variety of ways, for a variety of purposes, both within the literacy hour and at greater length outside of it, through big writing sessions. Opportunities will be given for spoken language to develop through small and large group discussion.

We will continue to encourage regular silent reading.

Mathematics

The Numeracy strategy will be taught in whole class lessons and in smaller sets. There will be regular opportunities to practise mental maths, to problem solve and to undertake investigations. During this half term the following areas will be addressed:-

Decimals, fractions, multiplication and division, handling data, shape and space, ratio and proportion, probability and measures.

Science

We will be investigating light and shadows, forces; how we can see dissolving, reversible and irreversible changes.

I.T.

The children will make use of the more advanced features of an Art package. In addition they will be using the Internet for research purposes and programs to support Maths, including a project based on spreadsheets.

P.E.

We will start with the skills needed for invasion games and gymnastics. Later in the term we will be teaching the children the skills for netball.

R.E.

We will be studying some aspects of Judaism and Buddhism.

Art

We will be experimenting with mark-making techniques in a variety of media. We will also be studying the art of William Morris and other Victorian artists.

French

The children will learn simple phrases in French with Mrs Rollé. The emphasis will be on the spoken language.

Homework

A minimum of one piece of homework will be set per week. The majority of this will be Maths or related to the topic. Homework will be set on a Thursday or a Friday each week and the children will need to hand their work in by the following Tuesday.

Cross-curricular

As a school we are endeavouring to make greater use of the outdoor environment, weather permitting.
