Autumn Term
Year 3 Curriculum content
Language
- The children will take part in the daily Literacy Hour.
- Text level work will focus on settings using adjectives, poetry and non-fiction texts. Non-fiction texts based on the Romans.
- Sentence level – punctuation and grammar, parts of speech.
- Word level phonic work – digraphs and trigraphs and linked vocabulary.
- Preparation for writing will include role play and drama guided reading and writing.
- Handwriting will concentrate on developing basic joins and letter formation in order to join up their handwriting.
Maths
- The children will take part in the daily Numeracy lesson.
- Every day mental ‘warm-up’ read and write numbers to 1000 doubles and halves, multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10 x tables.
- Count on/back in 10’s and 100’s.
- Add and subtraction facts for each number up to 20.
- Odd and even.
- Multiples of 10.
We will be following framework which covers the following areas:
Place value, ordering, estimating and rounding numbers. Understanding addition and subtraction, money, fraction, time. Making decisions and checking results. Measures including problems, shape and space. Handling data.
Science
The first half of term we shall be learning about teeth and healthy eating. After half term we shall be looking at magnets and springs.
History
Our study of the Romans will be based around the following headings:
- A brief introduction to the history of Rome and the development of the Roman Empire and civilisation.
- A focus upon the invasion of Britain.
- The Roman Army.
- Roman builders and buildings.
- Life as a Roman in Britain.
We shall be visiting Verulanium Museum in St Albans on September 24th and there will be a Roman day end of November (details to follow).
R.E.
- Hinduism and Sikhism particularly the Diwali celebrations.
- Christianity – Bible and life of Jesus including the Bible Stories.
Art and Craft
We will be experimenting with patterns in textiles from different times and cultures – particularly in relation to our Roman topic and also our R.E. topic. (Mosaics and Celtic patterns).
I.T.
- First talking word.
- Combining texts and graphics.
Music
The whole class will be taught the recorder for the next two terms culminating in a concert for parents at the end of each term.
P.E.
- Invasion games and gymnastics.
Homework
Homework is set on Fridays and is expected back on the following Wednesday unless otherwise stated. The focus will be on spellings. Maths and language consolidation activities will also be set, alongside some topic-related homework.
