Year 2 Curriculum content
Topic for the Autumn Term is ‘Castles and Knights’.
Science
- Making healthy foods. Types of food and food groups. Better choices of food.
- Food as part of keeping fit. Medicines and dangers of misuse of medicines. What else do we need?
- Forces, push and pull – how to make things speed up, slow down, change direction.
Language
- Continue to develop reading and use more variety in books, both fiction and non-fiction (instructions). Reading books changed on Thursdays.
- Language, oral and written related to the topic. Topic books and stories.
- Continue to develop handwriting with a view to writing with a pen.
- Working on sentence structure, capital letters and full stops, question marks and wider use of sentence connectives. Use of connectives to extend sentences.
- Weekly spellings.
- Poem anthology.
Maths
- Revision of addition and subtraction – numbers to 100.
- Introduction/revision multiplication
- Tables 2, 5 and 10
- Measuring using standard and non-standard units. Measuring themselves and objects
- Data collection related to topic.
- Time language e.g. hour, half-hour
- Shapes – 2D and 3D names and terms.
- Money – coin recognition and change.
- Simple word problems.

- Develop word processing skills – knowledge of keyboard functions.
Humanities
- Medieval history – knights and castles and medieval society
